Duplicating Background Layer

You can save yourself many hours of work if you begin Photoshop projects by duplicating the Background Layer. The Background layer is the bottom most image in the Layers palette, and the only layer when you first open a new photograph.

Duplicating the Background layer allows you to work on the image without altering the original. You can rename the copy and then experiment with various Photoshop techniques on that layer. You can easily delete the copied layer and your original image remains open and unchanged.

Project #1

Follow the instructions step by step:

  1. Open the following image in Photoshop.

2. In the Layers palette, click and drag the Background layer thumbnail over the New Layer thumbnail icon and release the mouse. Photoshop places a duplicated Background layer above the original.

3. Double-click the Background copy name to highlight it.

4. Type a new name.

5. Click the Visibility icon next to the original Background layer.
